Liam Morgan BVK is a cinematographer working across feature films, documentaries, commercials and music videos. He is a member of the German Society of Cinematographers.
His approach starts from the story and its needs. The place, natural light where it serves the scene, a camera that stays close to the people in front of it.
Liam came to cinematography from lighting as much as from camera operating. Working in both departments taught him to see them as one craft: how a space is lit decides what the camera can find, and where the camera stands decides what the light has to do. It is a background that shows in how he plans, rigs and shapes a scene.
Over the years the work has ranged from intimate dramas shot on location with a small crew to larger productions with complex lighting and camera movement. The common thread is a close collaboration with directors, designers and actors from the first conversation to the final grade.
Preparation matters as much as shooting: location scouts, camera and lens tests, and building a look with the director and the colourist well before the first day. A clear visual plan based on the needs of the project makes it easier to stay flexible when changes appear on the day.
Film, large-format digital and anamorphic lenses have all found a place in Liam’s work. Texture, grain and the way a lens renders faces and skin are part of the conversation from the start.
Projects have taken him from northern European coasts to the hills and cities of Southeast Asia, from his native Canada to the heights of the Great Rift Valley, from quiet interiors lit only by a window to night exteriors in rain and smoke. Each place asks for a different approach, and each has changed how he sees.
Alongside narrative film, there is regular work in commercials and music videos, where the format allows for bolder visual ideas and shorter, more concentrated shoots. These projects feed back into the longer films, and the other way round.
As a member of the German Society of Cinematographers (BVK), he takes part in the exchange between colleagues: screenings, workshops and conversations about craft, technology and the changing practice of the profession. This allows him to keep up with the constantly-evolving and adapting practice of film-making.
Alongside his work in film, Liam is a contemporary artist. That practice has its own website, liammmm.com, where his art can be seen separately from his cinematography. The two practices inform each other.
